Emily Mitchell is appointed marketing assistant at Barrett Steel
Barrett Steel has appointed 20 year old Emily Mitchell to the position of marketing assistant on a one year industry placement from Leeds Metropolitan University. Originally from Thornton in Bradford, Emily has already completed the first two years of a BA Honours degree in Marketing and Advertising Management, and will return to the University to complete her third and final year of study in September 2012.
Emily’s role at Barrett includes helping Chris Lamb, the Group’s marketing co-ordinator across all functions of marketing activity. She will have particular responsibility for developing the company’s social media strategy, increasing its online presence through SEO (search engine optimisation), and providing input for a number of new websites currently under development.
Emily Mitchell comments: “The idea of an industry placement is to give students as much experience in their specified degree as possible before leaving university and is designed to increase the student’s chance of finding a graduate position on completion of the degree course.
“Finding such a position is not so easy. It can be a long drawn out process – and very frustrating – applying for jobs that are advertised. I therefore decided to write to a number of large businesses operating in the Leeds / Bradford area that I thought could have the capacity to take on a placement student like myself.
“Many businesses I wrote to did not have any graduate schemes or placement opportunities in place, however I hoped to persuade them to think about it as an option for the future. I was delighted to get a positive reply from Chris Lamb, and even more delighted that they decided to take me on.”
Chris Lamb says he was particularly impressed by Emily’s determination to find a role that would match her studies and abilities. “Emily showed us very quickly that she had the will and enthusiasm to help Barrett Steel strengthen its position in the global marketplace and has already added value to the marketing function by moving our online strategy forward.”
